In 2020, a book by Alfred F. Majewicz titled Japan of the Late Meiji Period as Seen by Bronisław Piłsudski was published. Its basis is the political and social essays submitted by Bronisław Piłsudski by mail to Russian and Polish newspapers – in the first case, the letters were sent from Japan, where he found refuge after this country’s victory in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905, and in the second case they were written after his return to Poland (thanks to his direct contacts, he had an understanding of current events there). This is a rare testimony from an observer and participant of events in Japan, a country that was still just opening up to the outside world. An integral part of the book are comments and footnotes, some of which took the shape of separate essays or dissertations – as well as bridges “between then and now.” More than a century after the texts were written, the relevance of the issues discussed by Piłsudski is astonishing…
